There is No Such Thing as a Traditional Family

This weekend was all about family get-togethers for me – a picnic with my family (sadly, my brother and his family were traveling) and then a picnic with a friend of my family’s family.

One look at most families and it is clear – the unconventional family has replaced the traditional family as the norm.  We are a beautiful blend of marriages and second marriages, different religious backgrounds, different nationalities, gay and straight.  There are age differences within couples that blur the lines between generations. There are births and adoptions, there are hers, his and our children and pets who may as well be our children.

It is love, not blood, that defines a family.
